Manor Lords review: "Brimming with the potential"

Dynamic management systems provide indepth control over everything from the largest structures to the minutiae of sheep farming, all before you engage with the game's RTS combat elements. While some of these systems could use clarification, Manor Lords readily rewards curiosity, challenges creativity, and hints at the boldness of mechanics still to come. Why you can trust GamesRadar+ Our experts review games, movies and tech over countless hours, so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about our reviews policy. There is something about Manor Lords that feels both baffling and patient at the same time. Do I want to create a custom setting, ascribing my own winning conditions, bandit raid frequencies, starting supplies, and more? Or do I want to simply click one of three set gameplay scenarios and run with it? Either way, I get to design my own lordly coat of arms and live out the most lavish of land baron fantasies. FAST FACTS Early Access release date April 26, 2024 Platform(s) PC Developer Slavic Magic Publisher Hooded Horse Except, no I don't not immediately, anyway. This is a city builder that leans into the realism factor, with weather patterns, seasonality, and total headcount dictating the speed at which my townships either thrive or falter. Starting out with a trio of tents is a humbling experience, but it speaks to the sense of size, scale, and untapped growth potential that Manor Lords kindles so brilliantly as it enters Early Access. Training grounds (Image credit Hooded Horse) In my initial Manor Lords handson impressions, I described the solodev project as "Ye Olde Sim City with battle tactics". But after spending more time with the game, it's clear that there's a lot more to Slavic Magic's medieval city builder than constructing claythatched towers to defend. As it stands in Early Access, Manor Lords already facilitates your every creative whim while leaving room for new ones. Its gridless building system provides the perfect landscape for experimentation, even for a Sims 4 fanatic like myself who found the concept of unrestricted build potential almost overwhelming at first. Instead of having a shell to fill out, spoonfed suggestions of where and when to place various structures, Manor Lords trusts the player to decide the shape and feel of the world around them and eventually learn from these choices. The depth of urban planning only deepens the immersive experience of Manor Lords as, slowly but steadily, your budding township accrues higher settlement ranks and attracts more villagers to move there. These settlers aren't silent as they go about their work; zooming in from an isometric viewpoint allows you to hear their clamoring for yourself, chatting away to each other in legible English while going about their everyday pastoral lives. You can even opt to stroll about your village from groundlevel as a visiting noble, controlling an avatar like you might in a thirdperson action game, thanks to the promising Visit tool currently in development. (Image credit Hooded Horse) This feeling of creating a thriving world is reinforced even by Manor Lords' most rudimentary mechanics. More villagers means more spare hands to actually build your structures, so the task of assigning and unassigning jobs to your townspeople is an ongoing matter of strategy. Seasonality further complicates things having an apt supply of firewood, coal, and food to get through a harsh winter is paramount, so your farmers are best reassigned to timber gathering or woodcutting while their fields are in fallow. Harvestable resources are replenished at certain times of year, and it's possible to hunt animals to extinction if you don't set a population limit. Want to establish a trade route? Go for it, but be prepared for it to take a great many ingame days for your tradesmen to make the return trip via ox or horse. Manor Lords succeeds in helping players build a world that responds authentically to the choices made and that applies to the rule of war. Warring pieces (Image credit Hooded Horse) Manor Lords succeeds in helping players build a world that responds authentically. One Manor Lords mechanic I find especially interesting, even at an unfinished stage in Early Access, is the ability to correspond with neighboring lords and bandits. Selecting a paragraph of text to draft into a letter can spell the difference between neutral interregion relations perhaps someday, amicable ones? or igniting a hostile feud. This is where Manor Lords' smart straddling of the city builder and RTS genres comes into play. The combat elements can feel very much secondfiddle to the broader nature of Manor Lords as a finelydetailed city builderslashmanagement sim, as when an onscreen timer appeared to warn me of an oncoming attack after accidentally angering a nearby lord, I started to panic. I found the militiabuilding mechanics tough to grasp at first, especially when my village had neither the manpower for its own militia nor the regional funds available to pay mercenaries. I hadn't even thought about building a smithy yet, and with only a few spears to my name, I was left confused about how I was going to get myself out of the situation. (Image credit Hooded Horse) This is partly due to the lack of bakedin combat tutorials in Manor Lords, leaving me to scour all my construction and management tools for the quickest fix (hint there isn't one). I still don't fully understand how I managed to conquer my first few battles, as the RTS combat elements themselves feel almost deceptively simple you rally troops in a specific location, command them to either hold ground, press forward, or flee, and start praying. Compared to the density of its city builder mechanics, the RTS elements can feel like a functional, albeit wellintended, afterthought. Combat doesn't feel bad, but rather fairly rudimentary in its current state which makes sense, since the game is very much still a workinprogress. I have hopes that progress, it shall. Manor Lords doesn't make any promises outright, but it's clearly brimming with the potential to exceed its already broad horizons.

Unsung Hero movie review & film summary (2024)

(Spoiler she does and goes on to become Grammy winner Rebecca St. James; for KING & COUNTRY has won multiple Grammys, as well.) This is, as the title suggests, a tribute to the person who held the family together when everything was falling apart matriarch Helen Smallbone, played with optimism and authenticity by Daisy Betts. Unsung Hero follows the highs and lows of the Smallbones' efforts to stay afloat in a foreign land, but Helens resiliencyas well as her faithprovides a consistent throughline. The casting of Kirrilee Berger as Rebecca is particularly effective since she so closely resembles Betts, adding believability to their motherdaughter bond. We know these attractive and talented people will be fine even before they set foot in their local church and meet the bighearted neighbors who will rally around them in times of need. Its all very affirming to the Christian audience its geared toward and somewhat predictable from a narrative standpoint. What is surprising, though, is that there are actual moments of raw emotion within the workmanlike direction and episodic script. Things get ugly. Pride takes over. Having dragged his family halfway around the world to an empty rental home, and with job prospects falling through left and right, David feels depressed and resentful. He lashes out at the friendly fellow churchgoer (Lucas Black), whom he feels has been too generous alongside his perky wife, played by Hallmark Channel and Great American Family mainstay Candace Cameron Bure. Helen, in a rare show of anger, even explodes at David at one point. Unsung Hero could have used more of such emotional honesty. But it ultimately must deliver a broad uplift thats palatable for the whole family, so it tends to skim the surface. And aside from the parents and Rebecca, the characterization is woefully lacking; the other kids are all kind of a perky blur. Joel Smallbone has a solid screen presence in what must have been a challenging role, but his choices behind the camera with Ramsey feel mostly pedestrian.

‘Shōgun’ Finale: Anna Sawai Explains Mariko’s Last Act of Love for Blackthorne

Signup for our Swooon! letter! [Warning The following contains MAJOR spoilers for Shgun Episode 10, A Dream of a Dream.] Anna Sawais Mariko was the savior of Shgun in more ways than one. In the pivotal, riveting, and ultimately heartbreaking Shgun Episode 9, Crimson Sky, her actions in Osaka ended up becoming the climactic confrontation of the entire limited series. Mariko was lost in the final moments of Crimson Sky, but the Shgun Episode 10 finale, A Dream of a Dream, revealed that Mariko took secret efforts to save her lover, Cosmo Jarvis John Blackthorne. Blackthorne was apprehended by the Portuguese Christians, led by Father Martin Alvito (Tommy Bastow), in Osaka after the ambush that killed Mariko. Separated from Yabushige (Tadanobu Asano), Blackthorne was defenseless as Alvito and a band of soldiers walked him through the woods beyond Osaka castle. Blackthorne had just awoken from a dayslong sleep triggered by the blast that killed Mariko; he missed her burial because of it. The Anjin was still reeling from the loss of his lover when Alvito took him through the woods, a cold realization washing over him as he made sense of Toranagas (Hiroyuki Sanada) plan. Mariko, he realized, singlehandedly secured Toranagas victory over Lord Ishido (Takehiro Hira). Blackthorne was resigned to death after this tragic turn of events. He wryly laughed when Alvito said Mariko would be happy to see them being civil to each other. Its only a shame that day will never come. Will it, Father? Blackthorne asks. Is this where Im to be ambushed like the last time I tried to leave? No longer protected. Is that how I finally meet my end? I will not deny it. You were meant to die in these woods, Alvito replies. But an arrangement was made. You will leave Osaka alive. Alvito later reveals that it was Mariko who arranged Blackthornes safe passage. She asked the church to spare your life before she died, he tells Blackthorne before he leaves for Edo. And now I have. I have kept my word to her. Sawai tells TV Insider that Mariko felt it was her duty to protect Blackthorne, not because Lord Toranaga assigned her to be his guide through their language and culture, but because of her love for him. Its because she cares for him, Sawai explains. Its just what she believes will better his life. And without her, he could be in the wrong hands. And so I think that she felt like it was a responsibility before she took off. Mariko was never in denial about her feelings for Blackthorne; she just rarely prioritized them. But neither of them could put off their love any longer after Mariko nearly died through seppuku in Episode 9. They slept together that night after Blackthorne stepped in as her second, a selfless act that Sawai previously told TV Insider was the moment Mariko truly let herself love him. That was the moment she realizes that what they share is much deeper than what she had anticipated, Sawai said. Thats the gesture that changes everything. Mariko spent some of her final moments reciprocating that love. Back in Edo, he cast Marikos rosary (his only remaining piece of her) into the bay in her memory, saying that as long as he was by that water, hed be with her forever.

Ellen DeGeneres addresses the ‘hurtful’ end of her talk show in new stand-up set

The comedian began performing her Ellens Last StandUp Tour this week, her first major project since The Ellen DeGeneres Show finished its run in 2022. Oh yeah, I got kicked out of show business, DeGeneres quipped to the crowd at Largo at the Coronet Theater in West Hollywood, according to Rolling Stone. DeGeneres hosted her daytime show for 19 seasons. In 2020, she apologized on air after staffers had alleged the production environment on set was toxic a contrast to happy tone of the show and her public image. I became this onedimensional character who gave stuff away and danced up steps, DeGeneres joked in her set Wednesday. Do you know how hard it is to dance up steps? Would a mean person dance up steps? Had I ended my show by saying, Go fk yourself, people wouldve been pleasantly surprised. DeGeneres also referenced how her sitcom Ellen was cancelled in 1998, not long after she publicly shared she is gay. For those of you keeping score, this is the second time Ive been kicked out of show business, she said. Eventually theyre going to kick me out for a third time because Im mean, old and gay. DeGeneres said it had all taken a toll on her selfesteem, adding people either love you and idolize you or they hate you, and those people somehow are louder. It was so hurtful. I couldnt do anything to make myself understand that it wasnt personal, DeGeneres told the Largo audience in a conversation after her set. I just thought, Well this is not the way I wanted to end my career, but this is the way its ending. I just hated the way the show ended. I love that show so much

Would You Kill Yourself to Save the Earth? Caitlin Cronenberg Turns the Climate Crisis Into a

Yet the film always has an ironic levity to it, something she assigns to human nature. In a crisis, someone is always making a joke, Cronenberg says. Someone is always being light and funny and trying to get the mood to match the way that they feel, just because thats their response to fear. That fear bubbles and builds in the pressure cooker of Humane, which boasts a deliciously pulpy setup. In the near future, a climate disaster will force 20% of people to enroll in the governments new euthanasia program to sustain resources. But when a wealthy patriarch (Peter Gallagher) gathers his children (including Jay Baruchel and Emily Hampshire) at his mansion to tell them hes signed up for it with his wife, she disappears and the government comes knocking, still demanding two bodies. Cronenberg, working from a script by Michael Sparaga, says it was compelling to play with a dynamic where the people usually least impacted by the world around them are suddenly directly affected. This family believes that, even with the legitimate crisis in the world of Humane, that it doesnt apply to them, she says. I think thats universal in the places that I have experience with. I can just continue on the way that Ive been continuing and itll be fine. Thats why this situation in the movie is so satisfying, because what happens when it flips and the people who think it cant affect them are suddenly the ones who are being affected? Baruchel agrees that the idea of being placed in the line of fire is a sobering reflection on issues like climate change. I think a big mistake that a lot of us make is thinking that stuff that happens elsewhere cant happen here, he says. That were immune to things, you know. These are human issues that we face with our inability to respond correctly to scary shit. Courtesy of Shudder Although Humane is Cronenbergs first feature as a director, shes no stranger to the film industry, having worked as a still photographer on dozens of projects including movies directed by her father and brother, the filmmakers David and Brandon Cronenberg. Hampshire says that, although she was friends with Cronenberg before Humane, she was impressed by her leadership on set. We were so grateful that she was actually fucking great, and everything you want in a director in terms of confidence, but not an overconfidence in trying to prove to know everything that they maybe dont yet know, she says. And the trust in the actors I was super impressed. That flexibility allowed the team to film the majority of the feature in what was dubbed Ravenscliffe castle, a massive home in Hamilton, Ontario, instead of a set, due to the films low budget and quick shooting schedule. Despite the squeaky floors and the inability to knock down walls to make room for cameras, the location added a unique warmth to the production that provided an interesting juxtaposition to the dark concept. You feel the energy of this old house, Cronenberg says. You feel like, I know my way around, I know the ins and outs. Maybe this is our childhood home. I still have dreams about the house I grew up in constantly, and I think about all the little places I hid. I think spending a lot of time in a location makes you feel more at home there. In one scene, [Hampshires character] Rachel takes her shoes off the second she comes in the door because thats the house she grew up in. Of course shes going to do that. That makes the house feel real. These subtle moments of characterbuilding helped to ground the complex, shifty narrative. Even though these are kind of despicable characters, you see true sadness and heartbreak, Cronenberg says.

Live Updates: Harvey Weinstein’s New York Conviction Is Overturned

Prosecutors moved it forward with risky, boundarypushing bets. New Yorks top judges, many of them female, have held rounds of pained debates over whether his conviction was clean. Im not shocked, said Deborah Tuerkheimer, a former Manhattan prosecutor who is now a law professor at Northwestern, in an interview. The issue of whether Mr. Weinsteins trial was fair is a really close question that could have gone either way. Outside the justice system, evidence of Mr. Weinsteins sexual misconduct is overwhelming. After The New York revealed allegations of abuse by the producer in 2017, nearly 100 women came forward with accounts of pressure and manipulation by Mr. Weinstein. Their stories sparked the global MeToo reckoning. But while Mr. Weinsteins alleged victims could fill an entire courtroom, few of them could stand at the center of a New York criminal trial. Many of the horror stories were about sexual harassment, which is a civil violation, not a criminal one. Some were from out of state, especially California. Others fell beyond the statute of limitations. One of the original accusers was dropped from the trial because of allegations of police misconduct. Manhattan prosecutors, under pressure for not pursuing charges earlier, made a series of gambles. First, they proceeded with a trial based on only two victims, who accused him of sexually assaulting them but also admitted to having consensual sex with him at other times a combination that many experts say is too messy to win convictions. To prove their case against Mr. Weinstein, who denies all allegations of nonconsensual sex, the prosecutors had little concrete evidence. So to persuade the jury, the lawyers turned to a controversial strategy that would ultimately lead to the convictions undoing. They put additional women with accounts of abuse by Mr. Weinstein socalled Molineux witnesses on the stand to establish a pattern of predation. The decision seemed apt for the moment In a legal echo of the MeToo movement, Mr. Weinstein was forced to face a chorus of testimony from multiple women. The womens testimony was searing, and when Mr. Weinstein was convicted in 2020, and then sentenced to 23 years in prison, it looked like the prosecutors had expanded the possibilities for holding sex offenders accountable. I did it for all of us, Dawn Dunning, who served as a supporting witness in the trial, said in an interview afterward. I did it for the women who couldnt testify. I couldnt not do it. But because New York law is open to interpretation on when those witnesses are allowed, the move risked violating a cardinal rule of criminal trials Defendants must be judged on the acts they are being charged with. That became the main basis for Mr. Weinsteins repeated appeals of his conviction. For years, his lawyers have argued that his trial was fundamentally unfair, because it included witnesses who fell outside the scope of the charges. In addition to the alleged sexual assault victims, prosecutors brought in character witnesses who portrayed Mr. Weinstein as a capricious, cruel figure. In 2022, a New York appeals court dismissed those concerns and upheld his conviction, after a vigorous debate by the judges. They wrote that the testimony from the additional witnesses had been instrumental in showing that the producer did not see his victims as romantic partners or friends, but that his goal at all times was to position the women in such a way that he could have sex with them, and that whether the women consented or not was irrelevant to him. This February, when New Yorks highest court heard the producers lastchance appeal, the proceedings did not garner much attention. But they felt quietly dramatic Seven of the states highest judges, four of them women, were debating whether the man whose alleged offenses formed the cornerstone of the MeToo movement had been treated fairly in court. Today the court decided, with a majority that included three of those female judges, to throw out the conviction and order a new trial. Mr. Weinstein remains convicted in California and could be moved to prison there. We conclude that the trial court erroneously admitted testimony of uncharged, alleged prior sexual acts against persons other than the complainants of the underlying crimes, the judges wrote in their decision on Thursday. No person accused of illegality may be judged on proof of uncharged crimes that serve only to establish the accuseds propensity for criminal behavior, the opinion continued. But the decision landed by the slimmest of majorities 4 to 3, with stinging dissents from judges who said they feared the implications of the courts ruling. The majoritys determination perpetuates outdated notions of sexual violence and allows predators to escape accountability, Judge Madeline Singas wrote, adding that witness rules had evolved to be more flexible. By ignoring the legal and practical realities of proving a lack of consent, the majority has crafted a naive narrative. Reached by phone a few minutes after the court shared its decision, Ashley Judd, the first actress to come forward with allegations against Mr. Weinstein, was unwavering in her own judgment. That is unfair to survivors, she said of the ruling. We still live in our truth, she said. And we know what happened. The heated backandforth from the New York judges, and the early reaction to the decision, launched fresh debate about whether the ground rules for sexual misconduct convictions need to be updated. The MeToo movement showed how important it is to have accounts from multiple accusers, Ms. Turkeheimer said.

Zendaya’s Tennis Drama ‘Challengers’ Aims to Lead Sluggish Box Office With $15 Million Debut

Challengers, a steamy tennis drama starring Zendaya and directed by Luca Guadagnino, is poised to lead the domestic box office without much in the way of competition. The film, from Amazon MGM, is projected to collect $12 million to $15 million from 3,400 North American theaters in its opening weekend. Although those are modest projections for any nationwide release, its this weekends only major new movie and shouldnt have trouble claiming first place from A24s Civil War, the reigning champion. Last weekend, Civil War topped the box office for the second consecutive frame with $11.1 million and has grossed $70 million globally to date. Overall, the domestic box office is 20% behind the same point in 2023, according to Comscore. The steamy, Rrated Challengers was originally slated to premiere at 2023s Venice Film Festival and hit the big screen last fall. But the studio opted to delay its release to spring because the actors strike prevented Zendaya and her costars, West Side Story actor Mike Faist and The Crown breakout Josh OConnor, from being able to promote the movie. Now, Zendayas tennisthemed red carpet looks have been generating headline after headline. So postponing the movie, at least in terms of bolstering awareness among its target audience of twentysomethings, may prove to be worth it. Challengers carries a significant price tag of roughly $55 million, so Amazon MGM has a lot riding on the box office. Popular on Variety That Challengers, an Rrated drama with an arthouse sheen, is getting a nationwide release (rather than a platform rollout that accompanies most indie films) and could hit midteens to start is a testament to Zendayas star power. Of course, Amazon MGM has deep pockets and isnt an independent distributor. But Guadagninos movies arent usually mainstream. His biggest film, 2017s Call Me By Your Name, grossed just $18 million in the U.S. and $43 million globally while his most recent, 2022s Bones and All, fizzled with only $15 million worldwide. Nor are tennis films arent known to pack seats at multiplexes. Take 2017s Battle of the Sexes, starring Emma Stone and Steve Carrell as Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, which opened to $3 million and tapped out with $12 million domestically. Those were blockbuster results compared to the Shia Labeoufled Borg vs. McEnroe, about the rivalry between two other tennis legends, which failed to hit $4 million globally. And King Richard, which scored a best picture nomination and earned Will Smith an Oscar, opened to $5 million while simultaneously launching on HBO Max. It only managed to gross $15 million in total, although analysts believe ticket sales for King Richard were stifled by its dayanddate debut on streaming during COVID. Warner Bros. is distributing Challengers at the international box office, where the film has generated $765,000 from two smaller markets. The movie launches in 51 overseas territories over the weekend, followed by 14 additional countries in early May. Word of mouth will be crucial to the commercial success of Challengers, but so far critics seem to like it. Zendaya stars in the film as a former tennis prodigy who retires after an injury and later marries a tennis champion on a losing streak. She plots his comeback, which takes a turn after he must face off against another player, who happens to be his former best friend and her former lover. Varietys Peter Debruge called the movie hip and sexy, writing the plot of Challengers might sound stale, and yet, theres an electric spark to Guadagninos approach that elevates the material, rendering it fresh. Elsewhere, Lionsgates religious drama Unsung Hero is targeting $5 million to $7 million from 2,800 theaters in its debut. The feelgood film tells the true story of the Smallbone family as they move from Australia to Nashville and become Christian recording artists. Unsung Hero cost $6 million, so itll have little trouble becoming profitable for the studio. Its the latest collaboration between Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company following modest hits like I Can Only Imagine, Jesus Revolution and the Hillary Swankled Ordinary Angels. This weekends final new release, Roadsides Boy Kills World, a gruesome revenge thriller starring Bill Skarsgrd, is aiming for $2 million to $3 million.

Dharani interview on ‘Ghilli’ re-release: ‘Vijay was a boy then, he is a brand now’

Very close to this landmark is the Little Flower School for the Blind and the Deaf which was the venue way back in 2004 for the audio cassette release of Tamil film Ghilli starring Vijay, Trisha and Prakash Raj. It was here that the tunes of Appadi Podu and Arjunar Villu played for the first time, and subsequently, echoed in cinema halls when the film released to a rapturous reception in April 2004. Cut to April 2024, these tunes are still playing as the films rerelease has crowds thronging theatres, despite the IPL buzz. Why is a 20yearold Tamil film still being celebrated? Director Dharani has the answers. We last met 20 years ago and spoke about the same film, and here, we are, speaking about it yet again... Dharani When I heard about the rerelease, I imagined that it would be a oneday celebration, like a Vidyasagar concert or an AR Rahman concert. I never imagined that it would become such a celebration. People in the theatres are literally completing the dialogues. I visited a theatre, in which a mother and daughter were enjoying the film; the eightyearold daughter was watching it for the first time! The film and its content has remained alive till now, and Im grateful to the media and fans for celebrating it that way. Why do you think Ghilli, which has been played multiple times on television, is still being celebrated? Dharani I think it is because of the emotion behind the lead actor, who played a good boy, and for that, I am indebted to writer Gunasekar who helmed the Telugu original, Okkadu, which we remade as Ghilli. It has a naughty protagonist, who quarrels with his sister and has a strict father. All these aspects are very relatable to family audiences, then and now. Plus, all the actors in the film Vijay, Trisha and Prakash Raj are still very relevant today. Take us back to 2004, and tell us how you managed to pitch the idea of Ghilli to Vijay and producer AM Rathnam... Dharani I had finished Dhool, starring Vikram, and my assistants and I just wanted to go watch a film. Telugu film Okkadu had released, and we watched it in Midland Cinemas. It was gripping from the first scene, but I became very anxious as the film proceeded. I had a story idea based on a kabaddi player, another storyline on a romance between a guy who hid his girl in a lighthouse, and another road film idea. Okaddu had all these three elements in them. I realised that even if I didnt remake this, someone else would. We immediately met producer AM Rathnam, requested him to get its remake rights and make it in Tamil with Vijay. Ghilli remains one of Vijays most rewatchable films. How did his presence add to the storyline you had in mind? Dharani Vijay had till then not attempted so much humour in his films. In Ghilli, we were determined to get that sense of humour out. I would usually act and showcase what I wanted, and Vijay would immediately deliver that effortlessly in front of the camera; he was almost like an AI model replicating exactly what we had in mind. His comedy timing was excellent, and all the family sequences involving him, Ashish Vidyarthi, Janaki Sabesh and Jennifer were a hoot. You have a longstanding equation with music composer Vidyasagar, whose tunes in Ghilli have audiences dancing in theatres even today... Dharani During every composing session, we have a thagaraaru (argument), butit was always an anbaana thagaraaru (friendly argument). He insisted on having melody tunes, and I used to tell him, in a friendly way, to give those tracks to directors like Radhamohan and Viji (smiles). For this films template and speed, I wanted slightly fastpaced numbers, and he delivered in a big way. Finally, can we look forward to a Ghilli 2 sometime? Dharani Ghilli getting a rerelease now is the second part (laughs). I dont know if we would have got such a reception even if we made a Ghilli 2. S Gopinath, cinematographer Im thrilled about the rerelease hype, and I still fondly recall shooting at the massive sevenacre set, which was conceived by art director Maniraj, where all the lighthouse and beach sequences were shot. I was injured during its shooting and had to take a small break while recuperating; so, while I shot the entire film, I requested KV Anand (the late cinematographer) to step in to shoot the Appadi Podu song sequence alone. AM Rathnam, producer Ghilli was and is still a success because it treats its protagonist not as a hero but as a normal boy. We are very happy that its rerelease is doing well in cinema halls and that audiences are lapping it up.

‘Baby Reindeer’: The True Story Behind the Disturbing Netflix Series

Now the internet is just as obsessed with uncovering the true story that inspired the show, including the real people behind its characters. The limited series chronicles as Gadds Donny Dunn goes through a harrowing journey after interactions with his stalker Martha (Jessica Gunning) grow more tense, as layers from his past including his experience being sexually assaulted by a comedy writer he considered his mentor provide context for his own unpredictable behavior toward his tormenter. The show has been a surprise hit for Netflix, becoming the mostwatched English TV title in its second week of release with 13.3 million views, up an impressive 411.5% from its initial viewership of 2.2 million in its first four days. The project is only gaining notoriety as word spreads of its intricate storytelling and true crimetinged premise. Tom GoodmanHill as Darrien in Baby Reindeer (Netflix) Gadd first dramatized the bizarre events in a solo play that was also called Baby Reindeer, the nickname his stalker gave him. The show has been only lightly fictionalized, Gadd told The in 2019 when he staged his play in Edinburgh. The skeleton of the story is absolutely true. After articles speculated that actor, writer and director Sean Foley is the inspiration for the character of Darrien, an older male writer who sexually assaulted Gadd in real life, Gadd asked followers on Instagram to give up the search. People I love, have worked with, and admire (including Sean Foley) are unfairly getting caught up in speculation, Gadd wrote on his Instagram story on Monday. Please dont speculate on who any of the reallife people could be. Thats not the point of our show. Metro UK reports that Foley has been subjected to defamatory, abusive and threatening online posts after he was wrongly accused of being Darrien, and that police are now investigating. The character is played by Tom GoodmanHill, who does resemble the redhaired Foley somewhat, which has only further fueled online speculation. Is there a real Martha? Gadd has not shared the name of the real Martha and has stated that the real person doesnt look like the actress who portrays, Jessica Gunning, although fans think they have located the real Martha online. Weve gone to such great lengths to disguise her to the point that I dont think she would recognize herself, he told GQ. The unpredictable Martha fixates on the comedian who is called Donny Dunn in the series after she comes into the pub where he works and he gives her a cup of tea on the house, after she says she cant afford anything. In the Netflix series, Martha is eventually charged with three counts of stalking and harassment. She pleads guilty and receives nine months in prison and a fiveyear restraining order from contacting Donny. In real life, Gadd has not elaborated on his stalkers fate, only that the situation with her has been resolved. He told the of London, I had mixed feelings about it I didnt want to throw someone who was that level of mentally unwell in prison. In 2019, Gadd said that he had not heard from his stalker despite the publicity around the play. I have to admit that it hasnt [caused her to start stalking again], he told The . Maybe seeing this in the press has made her think twice about her behavior. Are the texts and emails in the show real? Gadd told Netflix he received 41,071 emails, 744 tweets, 46 Facebook messages, and 106 pages of letters from his stalker, who also left 350 hours of voicemail messages after getting his phone number. We see Dunn getting besieged with messages in the series, but its not clear if producers used the real texts and emails Gadd received in real life, though many viewers are assuming they are real.

Movie Review: A lyrical portrait of childhood in Cabrini-Green with ‘We Grown Now’

Its an evocative memory piece, wistful and honest, and a different kind of portrait of a very infamous place Chicagos CabriniGreen public housing development. And, pointedly, its a film that might not have existed without Participant, the activist film and television studio that just this month announced it was shutting down operations. Baig sets her film in the fall of 1992, a moment in which the promise of the 1940s urban renewal project had curdled beyond repair. It was there, on Oct. 13 of that year, that 7yearold Dantrell Davis was killed by a sniper while walking to elementary school with his mother. A few days later, the horror film Candyman opened across the country with its Black boogeyman and white heroine, inspiring pointed critiques for its regressive racial stereotypes. No longer the place of Good , CabriniGreen had become a metonym for the failures of the system. A few years later, authorities would begin demolishing buildings there, the last of which came down in 2011. Its now home to luxury apartments. But childhood is childhood for Malik (Blake Cameron Jones) and Eric (Gian Knight Ramirez). And the biggest thing on their mind at the beginning is transporting a found mattress down the stairs of the high rise, through the streets and sidewalks to their playground area where it will provide the perfect landing cushion for their favorite activity Jumping. Malik lives with his sister, mother Dolores (Jurnee Smollett, in a lovely performance) and grandmother (S. Epatha Merkerson). The adults are stable, calm and positive influences on the lives of the kids, keeping them safe in their little enclave. Still, realities of their small world inside CabriniGreen do occasionally creep in (or, rather, sometimes burst in at 2 a.m., when authorities decide to raid and trash their apartment looking for drugs that arent there). Dolores tries to protest and stick up for their rights but is painfully aware of her powerlessness over the everescalating hostilities towards them. The death of a classmate sends everyone into a spiral. Voices from the outside suddenly emerge, from Chicagos mayor Richard M. Daley and others vowing to clean up CabriniGreen. T pointed disconnect with what Malik and Erics daytoday is actually like, playing, jumping, teasing little sisters and sometimes escaping the dull nature documentary at their school to have a real adventure. Some of these moments land, especially the banter between the boys, but some are a little clunkier. These are the ones that lean more into whimsical ideas of play and inspiration (like when they decide to visit the Art Institute on their own and have a Ferris Bueller moment with the Seurat painting) than an authentic portrait of childhood. But also, why not show the kids being selfmotivated to talk about art? And its one of their last adventures before reality comes back to fracture their bond, when Maliks mother makes the decision to leave CabriniGreen for a job opportunity in Peoria. Their goodbyes may just have you reaching for a tissue a testament to the two young actors. Baig is a product of Chicago, though not CabriniGreen. There are perhaps questions about who should tell whose story, but she has come to it with a palpable empathy and interest, which is all you can ask for, really. Why would we want to make rules about filmmakers stepping outside the narrow confines of their personal experience to tell different stories? That care shines through in every frame (evocatively shot by Pat Scola), for the kids growing up in these circumstances, for the adults trying to shelter them, and for the magic theyre able to find despite everything. It is a delicate look at what life might have felt like beyond the fearmongering headlines, with an elegant score from Jay Wadley. We Grown Now is slightly dreamy and stylized, too, but instead of a liability, it makes this very small story feel grand, poetic and cinematic just like it would for an 11yearold. We Grown Now, a Sony Pictures Classics release in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago on Friday and expanding April 26, is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association for thematic material and language.

Children of the Sun review

It's a sniping puzzle game where you telekinetically control your bullet. You play as an excult member out for revenge who has to kill scores of cultists with just one bullet and your telekinetic powers. The game is focused on planning as you scout out each level to find and tag all the enemies. You don't actually move around the level yourself, but instead plan out the path of your bullet. You have telekinetic abilities that allow you to steer the bullet after it's been fired, letting you ricochet it from enemy to enemy. The order you kill the enemies in is important, as it can determine whether you succeed or fail the stage.
