Many of the dancers friends and family members now believe that they have joined a cult, and certainly the testimonies of exmembers suggest that they have strong reason to suspect that. But this takes its many strangerthanfiction components and turns them into a story that is unusually sensitive, for Netflix at least, and also desperately sad. The director Derek Doneen uses the Wilking sisters as his point of entry into what begins as a tale about the spectacle of social media and ambitious young people. Miranda and Melanie Wilking grew up in a workingclass home in Detroit, and dreamed of becoming professional dancers. There are home movies of them as small children, dancing in front of the TV; later, as they pursue careers in the dance world, they realise that social media could help them to gain exposure. Eventually, together, they built up over 3.3m followers on TikTok. Melanie, who talks frankly about her sister throughout this gripping threeparter, explains that social media is not really optional in her world. At auditions, she says, they ask how many followers you have. Metrics matter. The framing of social media here TikTok, mostly, but Instagram, a little is fascinating. Dancers with substantial followings talk about this ephemeral fame in vague terms, as a way of generating an income for themselves, without actually explaining how the money is made. Krunk dancer Kevin Konkrete Davis, a former 7M member, explains that he was a starving artist and lived in his car, but that social media made him feel as if he could get paid for his art. Robert Shinn, the pastor of the Shekinah Church and founder of 7M, which he calls a talent management company, appears to have seen an opportunity in this particular combination of creative ambition, relative poverty and a youthful lack of business knowhow or desire. Several TikTok dancers became affiliated with 7M, allowing Shinn to curate and manage their brand deals, for example. He provided them with an affordable and aesthetically pleasing place to live and a comfortable environment for creating content while also encouraging them to join his church, regularly attend his services and devote themselves to God and, as a man of God, to devote themselves to him. This begins to form itself into a more traditional cult documentary shape, as the extent to which Shinn and Shekinah have embedded themselves into members lives becomes plain to see. According to the testimonies of exmembers, and recordings of Shinn, the church encourages members to die to themselves and to their families. Though it is couched in flowery language about resurrection and rebirth, to outsiders, it may look a lot like the ageold fundamentalist tactic of cutting people off from the people who love them in order to strengthen their ties to their new belief system. It gets darker as the episodes progress and build up a wider picture. Shinn denies allegations of abuse, but interviewees here speak of their own experiences within the church and offer a different side of the story. Those following some of the key players online will have seen this unfolding on social media. Melanie had to post a video explaining why she and her sister no longer dance together. Miranda, now married to fellow 7M member James BDash Derrick and called Miranda Derrick, posts to deny that she is unsafe or in a cult. The girls parents, Dean and Kelly, joined Melanie on a livestream to accuse the church of brainwashing their daughter. For me, one of the most upsetting moments, of many, comes when Miranda finally agrees to meet up with her parents, having cut off almost all contact with them, only to livestream it to her followers, as if to prove that they are the problem. They tell her that they love her and miss her. As a picture of the zeitgeist, this is horribly mesmerising. It is harder than ever to distinguish between spectacle and reality. But it is at its strongest when taking the human angle and showing the effects of the church on those who left it behind and on the families of those who did not. I just found one aspect difficult to square Shinn is recorded talking about how famous the church will be and how everybody will know about 7M. He always tries to find answers to unsolved questions and does things that others ask him not to do. Arjun finds out t ghost named Divyavathi, and whoever tried to go near her lost their lives. Arjun falls in love with the ghost and in the process of learning what happened to Divyavathi, he comes across many surprises. Who is this Divyavathi? What happened to her? How did Prathap (Ravi Krishna) and Priya (Vaishnavi Chaitanya) assist Arjun in unraveling the mystery surrounding Divyavathi? This is what the movie is about. Plus Points Ashish has improved a lot compared to his debut film. He has shown more maturity in his performance in a role that requires him to behave in a subtle manner. Ashish looks charming in every frame, and his dialogue delivery is also neat. The screenplay in the first half isnt perfect, but the core idea of the movie, which is the hero falling for a ghost, makes us sit through. The movie begins on an interesting note with the backstory of the ghost. Though the film remains flat thereafter, the solid visuals and the central theme engage us to an extent. Ravi Krishna is alright in his role. Minus Points Not all interesting ideas look good on the screen. The hero falling in love with a ghost is an idea that isnt explored much, but the presentation isnt convincing. The interest factor created in the first half dies down by the end after the big revelation. Once the final twist is disclosed, everything looks silly and illogical. The character development of an artist upon whom the entire film revolves isnt done well. One would expect a thrilling ride in the second half, but what we get to see is a confusing narrative that tries to pack in a lot. When the hero and Vaishnavi Chaitanya start unraveling the mystery, we come across many characters, and it is too much to absorb. A lot of information is presented that goes over our heads. The second half makes us wonder what actually is happening. Vaishnavi Chaitanya doesnt get much scope to shine, and this is due to the way her character is written. The complex narration is not the only drawback. The film scores low in terms of emotions, too. They dont look natural, and not enough time is taken to showcase the emotional connection between the key characters. Technical Aspects Keeravanis background score is decent. The songs are just about okay. The writing isnt good, so we cant expect much from the music department. The art work is superb, and the visuals by P.C. Sreeram are topnotch. The movie is splendid visually, and credit should go to the legendary cinematographer for the fantastic visuals. The CG works are satisfactory. The editing is below par and creates too much confusion. Director Arun Bhimavarapu has come up with some interesting ideas, but he isnt successful in translating them effectively onto the screen. The first half is somewhat watchable, but the proceedings in the second half go for a toss with the complicated screenplay. Verdict On the whole, Love Me tries to be a unique horror thriller but ends up being a silly and unconvincing flick. The fascinating ideas are not told in an effective manner, and the movie looks illogical in many places. Ashish is good in his role, and the first half is somewhat watchable. But the whole second half is confusing with too much information, and the key twist disappoints big time. You can skip this film.

It turns out hes really good at it, convincing a sleazebag named Craig (Mike Markoff) that hes a professional killer by detailing his technique when it comes to body disposal. Garys colleagues (memorably played by Retta and Sanjay Rao) suggest that the mildmannered cat lover and bird watcher should be their new undercover hit man. Gary takes his new assignment very seriously, researching the people asking for a murder for hire in a way that makes them more likely to hand over the money. His ability to shape himself into the right man for the job could even be read as a bit of a metacommentary on acting itselfhes playing dress up, but hes also doing the same kind of research and character work that Powell himself has done for dozens of roles. And, of course, Garys personality gamesmanship reflects his teachings about philosophy, not only in how his background allows him to read people but in how the different characters change Gary himself. And thats when Ron enters the picture. When Madison (Adria Arjona) tries to hire a hit man, she meets Ron (aka Gary) in a diner called the Please U Caflike so many choices in Powell & Linklaters blindingly smart script, even that name doesnt seem accidental. Ron listens to her story about her abusive husband, Ray, and he makes the sudden decision to save Madison from herself. Take the money you were going to spend on murder and start a new life. Its only one of many beats in the back half of Hit Man thats a bit morally ambiguous.

It's not suddenly become crap. Huzzah! Doing an Assassin's Creedstyle game set in Japan years before Ubisoft decided to make Assassin's Creed Shadows , Sucker Punch delivers a gripping, beautiful, and often memorable samurai epicone loaded with tense sword fights, brutal assassinations, and plenty of storytelling class. So, yes, I rate the game and recommend you buy and play it if you haven't already, which it seems like plenty of PC gamers have already done . The Director's Cut also includes the Iki Island expansion, so you're getting the full Ghost of Tsushima experience. It does take a bit of time to find its feet, though, and, the early moments are quite slow and regimented. And it's still a four year old game, so despite its PCspecific graphical enhancements, the game's core engine is starting to look a bit dated by modern standards. (Image credit Future) Bringing a katana to a knife fight It might not be on the bleeding edge, but Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut still delivers a number of improvements over the console edition, including unlocked framerates, support for Nvidia DLSS3, AMD FSR3, and Intel XeSS, as well as compatibility with Nvidia Reflex and image qualityenhancing Nvidia DLAA. On top of that, this the game also supports ultrawide (219), super Ultrawide (329), and even 489 Triple Monitor support, meaning the sweeping landscapes of Tsushima really can stretch out to your vision's periphery. There are also a few nice little extras thrown in, too, such as the ability for cinematics to be rendered in realtime, a fact that unlocks Japanese voice language lip sync. This sounds like a small thing, but this is absolutely a game you should play with Japanese audio, be that in Samurai Cinema mode (Japanese language, English subs, fullcolour graphics) or Kurosawa (Japanese language, English subs, black and white, film grain heavy visuals) mode. As such, Japanese lip sync in cinematics adds to the immersion massively. (Image credit Future) Finally, there's adaptive haptic feedback, too, if you have a compatible controller. This means that you can get physical feedback when fighting with your blade, or shooting with your bow. A welcome addition. As for things that are not included with this PC edition, which I really would like to have seen, the most obvious is real time ray tracing, both in terms of global illumination and in terms of reflections. (Image credit Future) My experience with the PC the Director's Cut Playing the game on my primary rig, which is powered by an Nvidia RTX 3090 Ti, 32GB RAM (DDR4), and an AMD Ryzen 7 5700X, Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut ran consistently at over 100 fps at FHD resolution. The RTX 3090Ti is only DLSS2 compatible, too, so I'm confident that if you had a 40series card from Nvidia you'd likely achieve framerates of over 140fps. This game runs like butter, then, and even if you were using more dated hardware, I'm still very confident you'd get a locked framerate of 60fps or more. That high, stable framerate meant I found much of the combat easier and more natural compared to the console version. It's not quite as brutal and unforgiving as a soulslike, but timing sword counters and parries is key in this game, so the smoothness is a real benefit. It also helped when lining up swift bow shots, especially firing from on horseback, which require a good degree of precision. Swapping out the primary monitor for a 329 variant, the sweeping landscapes of Tsushima island do indeed look stunning. Wind rustling through the grasses and trees, shimmering lakes nestling up against wartorn rustic villages, majestic forts and pagodas breaking distant treelinesall seem slightly more real with the wider, perspectivebroadening aspect ratio. That said, Ghost of Tsushima remains really rather pretty at any aspect ratio. (Image credit Sucker Punch, Sony) While I think it's still stunning thanks to its fantastic art directionsomething that is absolutely enhanced by the PC version's bells and whistles there's also no escaping that, four years after its original release, Ghost of Tsushima is not a visual tourdeforce anymore, and its engine allows limited environmental interactivity and, well, realistic clutter. Don't get me wrong, not every game needs Starfieldlevels of interactable objects and environmental details, but aside from people, resources and collectibles, this is a pretty static world. (Image credit Future) It's also a world where, thanks to the lack of ray tracing, there are moments when the lightning looks pretty old hat and flat compared newer openworld third person actionadventure games like Star Wars Jedi Survivor . While the character models, textures, and lightning aren't quite at 2024 standards, this doesn't hamper the story or the action, with it technically pretty darn faultless. I didn't experience a single crash, either, and the only visual glitch I saw was a distant pagoda not rendering properly once, with its angled rafters appearing to float in the air. You Can't Run Forever movie review (2024)

Shes constantly losing the tonal grip on this story, directing scenes with a flat lack of energy that leaves Simmons lost in a movie that has no idea what to do with him. The film really gets started when Wade encounters Eddie (Allen Leech) and his stepdaughter Miranda (Isabelle Anaya), killing the former and sending the young woman into the woods to survive. While Mirandas very pregnant mother Jenny (Fernanda Urrejola) panics at home, and the inept local cops bumble their way through the investigation of what appear to be the first murders in their areathe best bit in the film involves an incompetent deputy reading a manual about how to handle a crime sceneWade hunts Miranda through the woods. Its another variation on The Most Dangerous Game. And yet its not really. Schumacher and cowriter Carolyn Carpenter dont really even trust their predator vs. prey concept, constantly bursting any rising tension by cutting back to a worried Jenny or the officers trying to figure out who is terrorizing their small town. And when flashbacks vaguely try to give Wade a loose motive for what hes doing, the whole thing falls apart even further. This kind of movie only works with a ruthless, motiveless killer who pushes a victim into discovering their inner strength. But that kind of direct one on one thriller requires trust in both performers and collaborators like editors and cinematographers who can make the setting into a threatening backdrop. Tbsolutely zero tension in You Cant Run Forever. It all feels like a lark, a project that would completely dissolve if not for the Oscar winner at its center. About that Oscar winnerthere is some perverted glee in watching a performer who is so far above everything else around him. The ruthlessness in his eyes, a twisted smile when he knows hes in charge, a true sense of dangerthats all there in Simmons choices. And yet none of his scene partners rise to meet what hes trying to do, creating a weird professional/amateur dynamic thats like watching mediocre athletes try to keep up with an allstar.

'Stellar Blade' Review: Near Automata

A legion of sexy female robots make a desperate assault on the unknowable aliens that are infesting Earth, and theyre picked off one by one until a single unit remains, who will be our best, last hope for making Earth safe again for the humans living offworld. In fairness, Yoko Tar himself has given the thumbs up to Shift Ups efforts in multiple interviews, and Nier series composer Okabe Keiichis studio handled around half of the (admittedly excellent and atmospheric) soundtrack. It just wouldve been nice if Stellar Blade had enough of its own identity to make those comparisons worthwhile. NieR Automata isnt one of those games that AAA publishers have latched onto and sucked all the creative juice out of, so a brazen clone at least has the passive benefit of being somewhat unique. The catch, though, is that NieR Automata abounds in astonishing and nearconstant surprises. Its a game of boundless creativity that gleefully shatters every clich of its genre. Stellar Blade, by comparison, is hampered by its fealty to convention. The story instantly falls face first into a predictable, milquetoast anime sewer the second we learn that our protagonists name is Eve, brought back from near death by a handsome wasteland mechanic named Adam. From the fact that regular humans are nowhere to be seen despite our heroes supposedly getting their marching orders from them, to Eves partner in the early stages of the game seemingly dying (a body is conspicuously never shown), players will be five steps ahead of Stellar Blades narrative at every turn. The result is an experience where tension and the excitement of discovery dont really exist. That isnt helped by just how samey the environments can get, despite the journey taking players from beautifully rendered ruined cities to deserts and sewers. Theres one genuinely striking and imaginative environment to break up the monotony, an elevator ride into space, but its so extremely close to the endgame that its too little too late. Many of the games sidequests and collectables are similarly monotonous, with the intriguing tales at the outset mostly involving going out to a remote location and investigating a corpse, with no real sense of play or emergent storytelling in the adventuring. For what its worth, Stellar Blade has got its charms in terms of raw gameplay, with the game playing offensively like NieR Automata but defensively like Sekiro Shadows Die Twice. T simplified but effective combo system and a laundry list of ranged options. Those pair rather nicely with a satisfyingly tricky parry system thats the one truly effective way to take out fortified, massive enemies. Those enemies are also a bright spot, with some truly gnarly, freakish mutant designs, and some intense higherlevel boss fights that demand full attention, especially since the unorthodox designs do make incoming attacks harder to telegraph. Ironically, given the controversy leading to its release, much of the games innovation comes in the form of the character customization, with a breathtakingly extensive number of outfits, accessories, and hairstyles for Eve, in exchange for maxing out the games meager relationships with various vendors in the hub city of Xion by buying more and more items. the outfits are outlandish and cool, but you may find yourself wishing that all this was for a character more interesting than Eve, who reacts to the horrors of the world and its sad, lamentable history with the same enthusiasm reserved for finding out Starbucks is out of macarons. Had Eve been a character with agency and personality, who actually responded to the drooling and leering that shes meant to embody, well, shed be Bayonetta. If her emptiness was hiding deep existential secrets that the game revealed with patience and empathy, shed be 2B. Instead, Eve is a busty, longlegged cipher of a doll who has no idea just how far up her hind quarters the games camera is designed to go, and seems somehow quite comfortable wearing scifi heels that make her feet look like horse hooves. Perhaps its unfair for this to be the sole focus for some players, but, unfortunately, there isnt a whole lot else going on to draw their gaze away from it.
